Why Sell at Farmers Markets?Farm direct marketing helps improve farmers' income and provides local consumers and businesses with fresh, high quality produce. Each week during the harvest season thousands of New Mexicans visit farmers' markets. This direct relationship between producer and consumer contributes to strengthening our local economies, keeping agricultural land and water in production and providing fresh, healthy food to our communities.
Research Your Local Farmers' Markets
There are 57 farmers' markets in New Mexico, and each market reflects the unique character of its farmers and community, soil and climate.
If you're trying to decide which farmers' market(s) might be the best for you to attend, check our market schedule to determine location, opening date, days of operation, and market hours. Other attributes to consider are demographics, site accommodations, market size, and the market product mix.
The best way to find an appropriate market is to visit markets and meet market managers. Managers can provide farmers with information about government regulations, licensing and the market vendor rules. (Some market rules and regulations are available on this website.) Market rules typically outline eligible products, stall size, setup and operations guidelines, fees and application form. Be sure to ask for an application form.
As farmers' market participants, vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables are eligible to participate in nutrition programs such as WIC and our Senior Nutrition Program if the market they attend participates in the program(s). These federal/state programs serve nutritionally at-risk families and individuals, and put money directly into the pockets of New Mexico's small farmers. In 2007, a total of approximately $350,000 went directly to the farmers through these voucher programs.
