Farmers are the foundation of our communities, supplying us with healthy, fresh foods, caring for the land, and navigating a changing world.

New Mexico is home to some of the oldest continually inhabited communities and cultural landscapes in the United States, where agriculture has flourished for millenia. Below is some eye opening data to share on farmers in New Mexico.

Did You Know:

  • Of the over 20,000 farms in New Mexico, more than 80% have annual sales of less than $20,000, a third are smaller than 10 acres, and 95% are family-owned and operated.
  • Over the past four years, more than 1,100 food producers across the state have participated in local food programs such as Double Up Food Bucks, the NM Grown Approved Supplier Program, the Seniors and WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs, and more.
  • Agricultural sales made by local farmers and ranchers at approximately 60 NMFMA-member direct-to-consumer outlets (including farmers’ markets, CSAs, farm stands, & grocery stores), have grown from $8.5 million in 2022 to $14.85 million in 2025.
  • Sales through NM Grown, the state’s institutional purchasing program, have increased ten-fold from $525,000 in FY21 to $5.4 million in FY25.
