Mr. G’s Organic Produce

By July 27, 2017Meet Some Farmers

Gary and Natasya Gundersen own and operate their 2-acre farm – Mr. G’s Organic Produce – in unincorporated Jacona, about 20 miles north of Santa Fe. They started farming their land about 15 years ago and have been fulltime farmers in New Mexico ever since (they previously farmed 12 acres in Kauai, where they grew ginger). Gary caught the farming bug while he was a student at the University of California – Santa Cruz working in the Farm and Garden Project as part of the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. The Farm and Garden Project discovers environmentally and socially sound methods to produce and distribute crops.

Natasya Gundersen’s favorite crop to grow is lettuce.

When Gary and Natasya started farming, they felt they had to teach customers about organic growing methods, but now the consumer is more educated and enthusiastically supports organic farming. The Gundersens are big advocates of using the Biodynamic French Intensive method of farming and want people to know you can grow large amounts of food on small amounts of land.

What They Grow

The farm produces a variety of greens, lettuce, salad mix, peppers, eggplants, beans, squash, peas, specialty tomatoes, root vegetables, Japanese cucumbers, eggplant, and sunflowers.

Natasya’s favorite food to grow is lettuce.

Favorite Food to Grow

Natasya’s favorite food to grow is lettuce, and the demand for the crisp greens reflects her dedication.

Where They Sell

Mr. G’s Organic Produce is available at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the Los Alamos Farmers’ Market on Thursdays.

I met Tash and Gary when they moved to Santa Fe 15 years ago and have been inspired by their vision and work ethic. It is truly a pleasure to know them!

Hi, we are looking for bulk fresh tomatoes for canning. Do you sell them? If not, do you know where we can buy them?

    Warm Regards

Hi Fabian. Our website represents New Mexico’s 75+ farmers’ markets, farm stands, mobile markets, and more. To find an outlet near you, and to contact each outlet to ask if they have tomatoes (and soon tomatoes will be almost everywhere), head to our market locator here: https://farmersmarketsnm.org/find-a-market/ (Be sure to ask farmers’ for their “seconds” tomatoes; these are good tomatoes that are used more for canning since they may be deformed or otherwise, which don’t sell well, but still taste delicious!)

  • One of my favorite all time families! They live their values in an inspiring and dedicated way that influenced my life from the time I first met them. They bring the Aloha and to know them is to love them. If I lived closer all I would eat would be grown on the land they steward. Thank you for raising the bar and spirits of the communities you serve.

Is there a way I can drive to your farm and pick up salad greens once a week? I can bring cash and have a standing order…
I live in Tesuque and normally would come to the market for your greens…or…is the market open in April?

    Hi Farming friends,
My name is Janet. I live in Los Alamos. I have a friend coming on Sat to pick up 2 boxes of produce and I’d like to get a box also. Can you send me a list of available vegetables to choose from? And your preferred method of payment?
    Best regards,
    Janet Schramm

    Hi Gary,
Dennis and Friends have a beer night on Thursday evening in Corralitos. I have discussions with Tim all the time. You are still a legend in the Santa Cruz area.
I miss the days when we discussed vegetable varieties. I’m still involved. Feel free to email me some time. Love the work you folks are doing.
    John

Hi John. Since this is a blog post Gary won’t see your message. You can contact him directly using the “email” link in the above post. Thank you!
